Atmel's AT90SC320856 Offers Its Customers Greater Flexibility
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 23, 2001--Atmel®
Corporation (Nasdaq:ATML) announced today the production release of
the AT90SC320856, the latest in its market leading AT90SC family of
AVR-based secure Flash microcontrollers for Smart Cards. It offers a
range of features that are ideally suited for GSM SIM cards and 3G
USIM cards, and also works well for other applications such as Pay TV
and government applications. The new secure microcontroller provides
customers with unique flexibility since it is the only product of its
type to offer a combination of on board ROM, Flash and EEPROM Memory.
In the AT90SC320856, 32K bytes ROM is used to store the fixed part
of the Operating System (OS), 8K bytes Flash is used to store the
customized parts of the OS where applications are stored or patches to
the main OS in ROM are made, and 56K bytes of EEPROM is used for data
and applications.
Benoit Makowka, Atmel's Marketing Manager for Mobile Telecomms
Secure ICs, explained, ``the use of Flash on the AT90SC320856 means
that SIM card vendors can be more reactive to their customers
requirements because it provides them with the opportunity to offer
customization very late in the card manufacturing process cycle. In
the SIM card industry time to market is key and card vendors offering
the Atmel chip will bring their customers a competitive edge.''
The AT90SC320856 is compatible to both GSM and 3G specifications
and is extremely cost competitive.
